Looks like they are just using the widget that is included int he basic install, with a couple of tweaks to make the categories display in two columns.

Here is the solution in a nutshell.

I went to wp-admin/options.php

Changed the db version to the last version I had installed (8204)

It then forced a database upgrade and fixed the problem!

Simple solution to a pain in the butt problem!

Can you do a more step by step for this? I believe I have the same issue.

What is the force db plugin? where can I get it. My searches are not finding it.

No stvwlf I did not. If it helps I also cannot use the install new plugin feature either.
