In reply to: Too many updates, slight rantAgain, you don’t *HAVE* to update every time there’s a new release. In fact, I don’t always update right away just so I’m not caught by something like what happened with 2.9/2.9.1, where there’s an almost immediate fix. It’s perfectly okay to set an upgrade schedule and keep to it, like, say only upgrading once a year, in the Spring. But, as has been already pointed out, there may be a good reason to upgrade, like a security vulnerability that’s only recently come to light.
Trust me, as someone who’s maintained a lot of different kinds of servers over the years, it’s not always the best thing to be the first guy to apply the update! So, don’t feel rushed. Let suckers, er, I mean, “early adopters” run point and find all the stuff that might have gotten missed.

In reply to: Error when trying to upgrade to WP 2.9?I had a similar problem and there was an answer elsewhere in the forums that helped. Take a look at this:
https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/309508?replies=3See if that doesn’t help.

In reply to: Fatal Error when trying to publish post or update postSorry, I should have searched more completely first, but I was in a bit of a panic over errors on the blog. The answer to this can be found here:

In reply to: WordPress A CMS? Wish It Was…Seasonal Content IssueYou know, my first thought was “Gee, is there *any* CMS that could do this out of the box?” I’m not saying that as a kind of criticism, but, rather, if there is a system out there, maybe someone can look at the underlying code and make a plugin for WordPress.
It seems like something that could be really useful, but I honestly have never actually seen that functionality in any of the systems I’ve looked at in the past.

In reply to: WordPress phone home privacy issues. Why is it there?I know I said I wouldn’t feed the troll again, but…
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straw_man
The argument was first, “you’re collecting private data that you can’t get via a public URL, so you’re hiding something and must be evil!”
Then, Otto showed, in fact, you could get most of it.
The argument changed to “Well, the *rest* of the data you collect isn’t public, so you’re hiding something and must be evil!”
In fact, the veritable definition of the straw man argument as found on Wikipedia. The argument goes through subtle changes and refinements as it is disproved. See the examples.Thanks.

In reply to: Copying WordPress files to another domainThat’s tricky!
This is the long way around, but…
You can backup the SQL database from domain1, then make a new WordPress install on domain2 and restore it there via cpanel. Then, you can export it via WordPress there and import it again. Of course, that assumes you have Admin Panel access on domain2.If you just have cpanel access both places, you can try merging the backup from domain1 into the database on domain2, but that way seems really dangerous and, at best, iffy. Or, as the great philosophers say, “there lies madness”.
Best way would be to get Admin access to the WordPress installations again, if you can.
Please, do let us know how you manage it, when you do.
Good luck!

In reply to: WordPress phone home privacy issues. Why is it there?Okay, I swear this is the last time I’ll “feed the troll”…
You know, you’re right, as long as you use some vague recollection of a case you might have read about a couple of years ago as some kind of “evidence” that your opinion is somehow a legal argument, my degrees and experience don’t matter. On the other hand, your example still doesn’t apply. If you bothered to Google the EA games DRM issue, you may find that it was, in fact, a PC game and quite possibly what you were talking about. Or not. Regardless, the example may or may not be applicable.
I’m not sure what particular axe you have to grind, but after Otto showed your straw man argument for what it was, I’d pretty well have thought the point was moot. Also, the “people in charge” have responded to you. Granted, you may not have liked their answer, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t answered your questions or given a good reason for collecting the data. They just haven’t answered in the way you want.
And, now, I’m just waiting for this “discussion” to devolve to a point that someone invokes Godwin’s Law. It’s headed that way, as far as I’m concerned, and makes me realize how much of a time-sink this just became.
Good luck!

In reply to: Moving WordPress from Sub directory to ParentOkay, I’m not a professional at all when it comes to WordPress, but I’ve been messing with it a bit.
What do you mean when you talk about moving it to the parent? You know that you could just change the URL where the frontpage of WordPress lives, right?
Check out these two docs:
https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory
https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Moving_WordPressOn that second one, check out the section titled “Moving WordPress On Your Site”. Pretty sure that should tell you what you need to know.
Good luck!

In reply to: WordPress phone home privacy issues. Why is it there?Because why should they? If I go to your URL, I can see most of the information you’re worried about out for public display. Or, if you really are that concerned about it, you have a remedy. Actually, two or three.
And, I’d disagree about them not “giving a rats ass” about what users think. When this initially came up, it was very clearly debated and I, as a user, felt it was put to bed. The identifiable information that you’re so concerned with doesn’t track you to a computer. It tracks information to a server on the PUBLIC internet. I’m not a lawyer, nor do I play one on the Internet, but I am someone with a business degree that’s had to navigate more than one contract and privacy issue for businesses. I think you’d better check your case law because the case that you’re very generally referring to sounds like one of several game console cases. They’re different and not applicable here. That involved either, Nintendo trying to block third-party cartridges, XBOX modifications, or the EA Spore DRM fiasco where they installed extra software that interfered with the OS to report back. All totally different situations than this.
Back when this originally came up, the debate was so limited that I don’t think you can really claim a significant portion of the installed userbase really “gives a rats ass” about the data being collected by www.ads-software.com.
It’s good that people keep track of it and make sure everything is on the up and up, like you were trying to do, but you’ve come to the party a bit late. This was all hashed out two years ago when it first came up. If you’d been around then, you might have been able to participate in that debate in an effective way.Keep fighting the good fight, though.

In reply to: Best gallery plugin for photographers?Well, if it’s just a matter of including some headers and footers and referencing the same stylesheet, I think I can probably manage. Generally, I don’t make things pretty, just talk to each other really well. Like my profile says, I’m a network plumber. Your data gets clogged up at a router somewhere and I’m the guy who gets called to ream out the CAT5 cable and make it flow. ?? My ex-wife used to say I was from the “big, orange button” design school, because I always used to say “Who cares what color it is until the app works the way you want?”
Thanks again for the insight and opinions.

In reply to: Best gallery plugin for photographers?Okay, I see how nice ZenPhoto is now! Thank you both for the more detailed insight!
Ipstenu, did you use the WordPress plugins for that example or did you modify the ZenPhoto templates?
And, again, thank you both for being so forthcoming about how this has worked for you. Probably going to be changing how I do at least one site as a result!

In reply to: WordPress phone home privacy issues. Why is it there?Check Google. Matt did comment on this ages and ages ago. In fact, I think it was in that same discussion…
https://lists.automattic.com/pipermail/wp-hackers/2009-December/029145.htmlYou can read the entire debate and remedy paraphrased here:
https://www.webmonkey.com/blog/Wordpress_Update_Causes_Privacy_ControversyIf you use Windows, you send more information back to Microsoft every time you do updates and they sure don’t tell you about it or give you a remedy for it.

In reply to: Best gallery plugin for photographers?I know you’re still in the implementation phase, but how do you feel about how these galleries integrate into WordPress? I checked out Ipstenu’s site and, while the gallery itself is nice, I don’t like that it takes you out of the rest of the site navigation so much. Thoughts?
