have since been able to install the plugin as per https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/500-errors-1and1-webhost#post-29415 .

Same problem with me. In my case, by mistake I had activated Buddypress Template pack before downloading Buddypress 1.2 After that I deactivated/ deleted Template pack and then install again. But it gives the same error after re-install & after loading Buddypress 1.2 ( which too is not getting activated).
