Update: I found that editing template-widget.php in the plugin folder helps. However that’s not sustainable, as it gets overwritten during any updates. How to prevent this?

Solved by hiding the preference groups using css, and using a html-widget to display the code in the sidebar. Plugin no longer needed in this case.
