Both Tim and Viitoria, I can’t tell you how much that helped: there are so many places online that give hints at how to edit a .htaccess file, but don’t really actually show you what’s going on. Now, after over 24 hours of on and off looking online for an education in Apache rules, I think I’ve got everything sorted.

I’m sure you’ve sorted this out by now, but just in case… the background colour is in the CSS file – it’s uber easy to change. The rest of it is in fg.gif (the vertical lines on the screen) and bg.gif (the shadow on either side of the main content. If you really want to change the theme colours you need to change those images too. I used this template as the base for my site after I made one which didn’t work without the BMH, and I didn’t know that hack at the time… If you want a peek it’s at https://www.sortroom.net
