About your comment, you mentioned the nice looking interface, … Well, this plugin was made for users with zero knowledge about website indexing, crawlers, etc. which probably concerns 75 to 80% WordPress website owners in the world. Optimizing the robots.txt is not such a common SEO technic that you can find on the web.
The main idea was to offer a user-friendly interface for people willing to optimize their website indexing without the need of playing in the code.
Also, considering that a single mistake in this file can litteraly destroy a website ranking on SERPs, using a plugin allowing to make it the right way (for the greatest number of people) is a safe choice. And we thought that it was worth it!
Of course, people could simply copy-paste the content of a regular robots.txt file found on Web (or other websites), but to make sure it fits their needs (which is important), they would have to learn what is a robots.txt, where to locate it (on server), what to do with it, how to optimize it, etc. … Which tends to be time-consuming and time is what more and more people don’t have.
Again, this plugin is just an easiest way to make things right…
