In reply to: Newspaper site, and WP as CMSThank you, everybody, for the great feedback.
Directorysieve, I guess we should be glad we don’t have a lot of breaking news to feature, since that kind of news is usually bad! We do use a marquee effect when we need to get the reader’s attention, like for school closing due to snow, election results, etc.

In reply to: IE problems with Calendar plug-inDid anyone find a fix for this? Since so many people still use MSIE, there needs to be a fix in the plugin. We can’t expect users to reset their MSIE options.

In reply to: 2.9 my story.Like vegasrenie, I’m waiting a bit before taking the leap from 2.8.6 to 2.9. I was even running 2.9 rare on a test site and had no trouble, and upgraded 3 other sites successfully. But my “main” site is a busy online community newspaper, and I have to take things really slowly and carefully. I have a lot of plugins on that site, and many widgets working to make WordPress behave like a real CMS. The other sites I successfully upgraded are much simpler in their construction, with many fewer plugins and widgets.
I shouldn’t need the Scissors plugin after 2.9, anyway!

In reply to: User interface suggestion re: open-closeI should add, why not simply put text like “Click here to see all publishing options” on the Publish button, instead of the down arrow? Put explanatory text on all the open/close buttons.

In reply to: Intermittent site crashes–unending loop created?I had to hire somebody to help, but we think we’ve discovered the problems causing this.
For one thing, the My Category Order plugin, while it was still working to order categories, was also throwing off an error every time a page was loaded.
Also, a CRON job was running once an hour. It was coming from an old plugin, Ad Rotator, that I had tested eons ago, deactivated and deleted!
There were a bunch of empty rows in the database tables.
The site is running faster now, and so far, we haven’t had a crash as before. We’ll see how it goes over the next weeks.

In reply to: Too many updates, slight rantSimple fix: use a different theme. I use Atahualpa, version 3.4.4, and it allows you to make custom edits to many functions, and those edits are kept safe from over-writing by WP updates, or even theme updates. It’s a marvel, and its user support forum is the best I’ve ever seen. It’s also the most configurable theme out there, all from a very easy to use interface.
I’m a power user in the sense that I manage a lot of different websites, most of them using WP, but I’m not a PHP programmer or database guru, so like you, I dread having to do much under the hood and possibly break something. But I recognize the beauty of the code and the dedication of the WP developers and the army of plugin authors, and I certainly want to keep my sites safe from hacks (it happened to me already with WP 2.7.1). WP is a work in progress and always will be, and I’ll bet upgrading it and themes will become even easier in the future.
Because of Atahualpa, when there is a WP upgrade, I can do it with the auto upgrade button, and unless a plugin I’m using hasn’t been updated yet, I have no problems. Get Atahualpa here: https://wordpress.bytesforall.com/?p=81

In reply to: Intermittent site crashes–unending loop created?I’ll try that, thanks.
Yes, probably too many plugins, but the site really needs a CMS, and the plugins bring WordPress to that level. Sorta-kinda.The DB Manager plugin is telling you to move the .htaccess file from its own folder to the backup-db folder in wp-content. You have to do the move via FTP. Just download the file to your local hard drive, switch to the wp-content/backup-db folder, and upload it there.

In reply to: Appearance>Editor issuesSame thing here. WP2.9 rare installed on a new site, no other version of WP existing. With Atahualpa 3.4.4 theme, I tried to open the index.php file, but when first opening Appearance/Editor, got this message in pink: Oops, no such file exists! Double check the name and try again, merci.
Can’t open any of the files. Then I tried it with the Kubrick default theme activated. Same problem. I did an automatic download of the nightly build just before trying this.
