Sorry about the delay in answering, email notification did not happen.

In the meantime I installed the google reCaptcha which did work. I suppose common sense should apply: if I hate clicking on street signs etc. so will others. Then to find that it is possibly ineffective anyway.

Next job is to uninstall and if the site gets too much rubbish I will activate akismet.

Situation resolved after closing firefox and opening again. I had been logged in and even though I had closed the dashboard I was still being given the option to edit.

Sorry, GeneratePress should be the theme for the above.

Thank you for the suggestion, though I had tried it already (having done this in the distant past) without it having effect. Strangely, pressing enter and shift does work, so half the problem solved.
