I posted about this problem, and so did at least one other user (Moshu?). We didn’t get any comments, suggestions, or solutions.

I think that means we get to hand-edit all our old entries (in my case, hundreds of them, both posts and pages).

I seriously doubt I’ll ever upgrade again.

I have unwanted characters too. I upgraded to WP 2.2.1 with Fantastico. All went well except for unwanted characters appearing in existing entries – several unwanted characters per entry, hundreds of entries on two blogs – I posted about it yesterday with no reply. I’m concerned that I’m going to have to hand-edit all these entries to get rid of the unwanted characters.

Any ideas?
