@martin, when we run the plugin, it deletes all thumbnails again and creates only the standard formats of wordpress and all “add_size” entries from your theme.

Are your website running above windows or linux?

To begin at the beginning: what is a thumbnail? Is it the preview image which is displayed in the Image Library and in the Image Editor and in the Page Editor/Add Media window? Or is it also the different sizes of the uploaded image which are automatically created by WP or by responsive themes?

Image = File uploaded
Thumbnail = Many images with many sizes, automatically created by WP on upload event

And does FRT delete all sizes of image which haven’t yet been added to a page or post?

No. All thumbnails are deleted and regenerated

And does FRT do anything as soon as I activate it or does it wait until I instruct it to scan?

FRT should be used only when you change the size of your thumbnail patterns (small, medium, large) or when you add or remove any statement add_image_size of your theme

And are there any special considerations for Retina-capable themes or does FRT treat them just the same as non-retina themes?

How does FRT know that these “responsive” image variants will be needed on smaller screen devices?

FTR just delete all and regenerate. If you need some size especial, add how many add_image_size into your theme

Why is this good/better? Are there any circumstances where the RT way might be better?

It is always good for 2 reasons:
– Frees space when you change the sizes of thumbs
– If you do not change the size of the thumbs, the routine of wordpress will not create it again

Update the wp_attachment_metadata and wp_attachment_file while regenerate

This fixes some bugs caused by the update of wordpress or some other plugin. FRT ensures integrity joined their images, thus ensuring the proper creation of thumbs

Use GB Image Editor to regenerate

GB is deprecated since version 3.5 +, however, in my opinion, is more efficient than the current library, so FRT use it
