In reply to: [Jetpack - WP Security, Backup, Speed, & Growth] Jetpack Fatal ErrorMultiple people are experiencing issues. Are you on BlueHost or HostGator by chance @backpackingseries ?
If so you might want to follow the thread I started yesterday
Just had another issue “directive” error suddenly pop up on multiple sites (not using the same theme). Contacted BlueHost and the tech ended up changing the permalink setting (though I have not made any changes to that since my initial setup) which did not resolve the problem. And then (without telling me) downgraded my WP version and told me to refresh. Solved the problem but then I immediately noticed the message stating that a new version of WP was available. So I questioned her further and that’s when she told me about downgrading WP. When I asked why, this was their reply, “There is currently known issue with version 5.5 where some cannot edit the website and some website will be broken.” Tech would not elaborate on this “known issue”
Just my opinion, there seems to be something going on with BlueHost period where things are suddenly breaking.
@jeherve thanks for jumping in on this issue that seems to be affecting a lot of people who use BlueHost or HostGator.
Let me try to answer all your questions:
1. The issue happened when I only had 5 plugins initially activated on the site. The issue happened again when I disabled them all and just activated Jetpack. I also deleted the Jetpack files from cPanel and then did a manual upload of jetpack and again the site crashed.
2. No I don’t have any security services running on my site. The only thing I have is SSL/TLS
3. I do not have SiteLock.People have commented on my main Open Ticket and so far I have counted 7 people that have similar issues, 6 people use BlueHost and 1 uses HostGator, both are under the parent company of Endurance International Group. As a test, I utilized a site I have on GoDaddy to try and re-create the issue. My Godaddy site did not crash. So it would appear that it is something specifically happening with BlueHost and HostGator.
On my old site, I deactivated all plugins then fresh installed jetpack, five minutes later the site had crashed and noticed that the class.jetpack.php file was just moved into .quarantine folder in the main directory. When I opened that file it looked correctly according to what it should be. My hypothetical suspicion is that BlueHost may have an anti malware or virus software that is false positive flagging the class.jetpack.php file and putting it into quarantine and then deleting the file from the jetpack plugin folder.
Issue just started today. Do you use BlueHost?
@jamesprw@jamesprw you are not the only one. Me and another person on here have been chatting on my thread and comparing notes. We both happen to use Bluehost. Tech support there seems to think there’s an issue with the Jetpack script.
@clove001 I contacted support earlier myself. Timewaster, at least the two tech peeps I was chatting with. I was beginning to wonder if Bluehost had been hacked.
Additional info: So, tried to update Jetpack from a different source this time, got the same error. Searched for class.jetpack.php globally through my cPanel and noticed there is a /quarantine.class.jetpack.php.[randomnumbers] file. Went to an old site, updated WordPress to 5.5, then updated Jetpack plugin through dashboard. Got critical error when I tried to update. Went to cPanel and did global search and found that there is now two /quarantine.class.jetpack.php files, though the second one had a different set of seemingly random numbers, though the first 4 were the same. Then later I did a global search again and the files were apparently deleted. I also use BlueHost.
@clove001 thanks for the info. Something weird is going on for sure. If you don’t mind me asking, who is your host?
@clove001 when did you push the Jetpack update?
After doing some more investigating, it appears that the class.jetpack.php file is missing when installing the plugin. I have deleted the entire Jetpack folder from the plugins folder in wp-content and did a fresh install, yet this issue persists with this fresh install.
