1. enable – System preferences > sharing > Web sharing
2. install a more complex php than the core apple one from here: https://php-osx.liip.ch/
3. download and instal mysql from here: https://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/
4. create a database and a mysql user
5. edit the wp-config.php file accordingly
6. open up https://localhost/yourwordpressfolder

Seems like I got it sorted for now. The solution, if anybody ever need it is not to try compiling and installing php from source as there can be many vulnerable points that can broke some wordpress functionality like for example the shortcodes. I personally couldn’t find the php “bug” that was responsible for breaking the shortcodes, however came across with this solution that reinstalled a pre-compiled php with most of the modules needed for wp.
