Looks like my problem is with Microsoft Edge. The problem I’m having does not show up in Chrome.
Any comments are welcome!

Okay, I think I fixed it. Or a at least found another workaround. Placing a widget in the Default Widget area in WordPress admin prevents the menu tree from displaying in the sidebar.
But, placing a widget in the Page Sidebar does not show the widget, nor does it prevent the menu tree from displaying.
Any comments would be great!
I wonder if Jetpack’s widget visibility options has an effect?

I made the changes you suggested but I still have the menu tree showing up.

I have it figured out. For the site title and tag line show on all pages, all pages except the static front page must NOT be showing a header image. This, along with the check boxes in the “Header Image” section in the customizer.

Both checkboxes in the header image are unchecked. But I still have the title and tag line on only the home page.
