You might not see slider buttons in lightbox for a media which was uploaded through a comment. But for other media, you can see the slider buttons in a lightbox.
You can set the lightbox to full width and height using CSS, to make it fullscreen. Let us know if you need any help with that.

You can please help me to understand the issue more clearly by sharing some visual of the issue?

I tried to replicate the issue at my end but was unable to reproduce it. Able to upload media with JPEG, PNG, JPG file formats in BuddyPress group activity feed without any error.

It could be a conflict with a third party plugin/theme. Please deactivate all plugins except BuddyPress, rtMedia and install and activate any default WordPress theme. Please check if you still face the same issue.
