SOlved – I disabled the WordPress Amazon Associate plugin and the nextgen gallery worked again. I think I had a jquery feature activated on the amazon associate plugin. Need to investigate more but this was NOT a nextgen issue! Yay!

How did you get it to work? I am still struggling with it.

To get rid of the gap, I found this on the faq’s page:
This is based on your theme and the gallery style sheet. Look into the NextGEN Gallery Style sheet and search for “clear:both;“. Delete all of them.
