  • I’ve just successfully installed WordPress 3.0 onto a subdomain and everything was going smoothly until I tried to upload a custom header and got the message: Unable to create directory /var/www/vhosts/eskyweb.com/subdomains/blog/httpdocs/wp-content/uploads. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

I have searched this forum and read every thread on the problem but nothing has fixed it. I’ve tried:

    1) deleting and re-uploading all the wordpress files on my ftp
    2) changing permissions of the wp-content and even httpdocs folders to 766, 767 and 777
    3) creating an uploads directory manually via ftp
    4) checking PHP safe mode on the server – it’s off
    5) checking minimum requirements – that’s fine
    6) making sure settings > media > store uploads in this folder was set to wp-content/uploads

I still can’t upload any images. Please help!

Not advisable to set the directories to chmod 777 (i.e.Security Issues). If you have checked the box that says “Organize my uploads into month- and year-based folders” via Settings -> Media, then you have to manually create the wp-content/uploads folder, Year folder (e.g. uploads/2011), Month folder (e.g. 2011/05) and set the chmod to 775 to each of these directories.

I have set up my wordpress in it’s own directory (mysite.com/cms) but want to host images on a subdomain (cdn.mysite.com/images).

I’ve tried everything I can think of in the Media Settings, and double (and triple) checked the permissions (755), but nothing seems to work. The files are crunching, but not appearing on the server.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Unable to create directory /wp-content/uploads/2011/01. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

Is it because of the new year? Should I just create all the folders myself or is there a fix I need so WP will work and create the folders (as it has been doing)?

I’ve read other information about directory errors and none of it applies to this. I’ve had no trouble uploading files all last year.
