My host support said, several conversion plugins have problems with newer WordPress versions. They didn’t elaborate and suggested I convert my file using an online service. I don’t like that suggestion though.

I’m using GD for now, and it’s working fine. I don’t know what the difference would be with Imagick but right now, I don’t really care. I didn’t expect this to turn into such a mystery. I really appreciate all the time you’ve spent on this and I’m also not sure what else to try.

I used Imagick and didn’t get any other problem than the one with same filesizes.

I changed between Imagick and GD several times and whenever I used Imagick, the quality/filesizes would always be the same. I have since writing been uploading multiple images and checking out the different quality levels. With GD, it’s working. With Imagick, it never did and still doesn’t.

I copied webp.txt to my computer and deleted it from the server. Then changed to GD and tested again. This created a new webp.txt as well.

I got it working! With the one you linked to, but also with the one I installed from WordPress.

I changed Conversion Method from Imagick to GD. I had played with this option before, but it might have been before I noticed size issues and since both still do create webp files, I guess it wasn’t obvious to me, to have a closer look at these.

I trust it’s OK I only copy/paste webp.txt content once for each quality level. It is identical for other size variations.

GD is exactly the same with only differences in time and method name.

Edit: Even though Imagick shows lossless is at 95 in quality, I suppose it’s actually not used and probably defaults to GD – and therefore, no quality parameter is passed/used/recognized?

This recording is from my most basic wordpress install.

Previously, I’ve pretty much always been adding from a page and while using Elementor. Which in theory shouldn’t make any difference.

I know about uploads-web-pc folder. This is where I previously would delete from. The plugin would then detect new amount of photos which can be converted and I’d re-generate with Start Bulk Optimization (but without force enabled) and it worked as expected – except for the quality part.

Ps. the files in the video are original resolution (I forgot to use smaller ones) so it takes a bit longer in my video.

I’ve spent so much time that I need a break away from this for now. I hope you understand ??

Just so you aren’t wondering: I know the plugin wont regenerate a webp, if I delete it. The plugin detects non-converted files and I would just bulk convert but without using the force option. Lately, I uploaded using different names each time, because that was simpler/faster than manually deleting webp using FTP/whatever.

I wrote to my host provider and will see what they say.

I haven’t tried the force option because I have 11000+ photos. Instead, I’ve tried manually deleting using FTP and lately, by uploading with new filenames each time, to ensure there’s no cache related conflict going on.

I just tried again on a fresh WordPress installation and Hello theme, on a different subdomain. It’s the same thing there.

I’m learning towards a server permission thing causing this but I don’t know what. I can’t think of anything else.

Both images are identical when uploading, except for different filenames. Converter was set to Lossy quality when the first one was uploaded and it was changed to Lossless, before the second one was uploaded.

I uploaded differently than what I normally do. Normally, my images are somewhat optimized before uploading. But this time, I tried without doing that, and instead uploaded full resolution/full quality to see, if that would make any difference. It shouldn’t, but I’m running out of ideas of things to try.

Currently, all optimization related plugins are disabled. My theme has a built in setting for compression and it can’t be disabled. I did some extensive testing last night and it seems, the themes settings will only affect images in albums/galleries, and not for images in pages and blog posts.

I use Elementor Pro as pagebuilder plugin (also used in abobementioned page) but do not recall ever having seen image quality related settings in it.

And I just tried something new: uploaded same image twice, but with different filenames.

I uploaded the first with lowest quality setting and then viewed the page it was added to.

I then uploaded the other photo, but this time using highest quality – I changed setting before image was uploaded – and viewed the page.

Both files were converted to webp but the filesizes are exactly the same.

My theme has a built in image optimizing (compression) setting. It can’t be disabled. Perhaps this is the cause of the issue. But, I use a plugin to sharpen resized images, and it has it’s own compression setting and it works fine though.

I’ve found the problem. It’s a conflict with Autoptimize, where I also had webp enabled.

Nevermind… still there.

I’ve tested like the pages described and do get webp files served. My only issue is, that whichever Conversion Strategy I chose, it does not actually alter how the new files are. It’s like the setting is bypassed.

I see the files from FTP and delete them there as well and then regenerate manually from the plugin page.

I was just trying out Webp Express and it’s actually same thing there. WebP files gets generated, but no matter which quality I enter, it’s always the same. So now I’m suspecting it’s a host thing. Could that be a possibility?

Resetting the setting seems to have fixed the issue. Awesome!

Exactly what did you do?

A client of mine discovered the issue (the very first I sent a link to). I never encountered it but I’ve been using Firefox and no issue here. I tried with Chrome and it gets messy in there: fav and cart gets emptied. Fav list gets sent to me again and again without having clicked on that button.

I tried removing GA and FB pixel code and also tried disabling the injection plugin. Nothing worked.
