For example… is_single() tells me that I am in a post but not if it is an advertisement or a blog post.

Yes, in my ad design I have a label called “quality” as you can see in the screenshot.

The solution you mention using the block id does not work for me on any of my WordPress 5.8 sites.

If you are using a child theme no problems should occur, that’s why child themes are used. But whenever in doubt make a backup of your site before making changes.
