Problem solved. Even though I had emptied the cache and disabled the caching plug-in, it still left a folder that was being accessed. I looked at the situation with ftp and saw that deleting the plugin removed the folder and the problem I had stopped. Thanks Mike for making me dig further.

I had two plugins that cached pages, but one of them I had emptied the cache and disabled the plugin before this started to happen. The other one, cloud flare, I emptied the cache after this started and tried with it disabled with no change. I’ve suspected caching also. I emptied caches on my browser also. Am I not being thorough enough? What would be a disciplined way to empty all possible caches to be sure if that’s where the problem lies.

I actually figured out the problem and it’s kind of interesting. My host, DreamHost, recently partnered with CloudFlare, a CDN and distributed DNS company, and offered the use of CloudFlare to all their domains. One issue with doing that is that CloudFlare requires that your site url be configured to always default to “www.sitename.com” instead of “site name.com”. So I made that setting change, but of course, I didn’t think to change the site url within the WordPress settings panel. The redirect problem is intermittent within CloudFlare because of DNS magic I can’t comprehend, but it bit me this morning. Now all is well. Thanks for your help. Always learning.

You’re confusing me. You said the first step was to switch to Twenty Eleven. I renamed the current theme folder as you said. You said the second step was resetting the plugins folder; the linked page said to change the plugins folder name to plugins.hold and I did that. So what is the second step. I can’t log in.

added -old to theme folder name; changed plugin folder name to plugins.hold. Still getting too many redirects, still login page just lands me back on login page.
