• Hi

    I have setup WordPress using an Apache web server, MySQL database and PHP-FPM on a VPS (virtual private server) hosted in the cloud on a Ubuntu 20.04 server. I purchased a domain from Namescheap and I also have a Google G Suite plan to provide me with emails

    [email protected] (main email)
    [email protected] (alias email)

    I now want to setup emails for WordPress but I don’t seem to be having any luck. I’ve spent about a week on this including posting in great detail to two other forum sites and I’m not getting anywhere. All I know is WordPress relies on the PHP mail function, but it’s getting this working which is what I seem to be having problems with.

    I’ve first noticed that emails weren’t being sent out when I tried to update the administrator email in the WordPress dashboard Settings > General > Administration Email Address and I also wasn’t getting any emails from submitted Contact Form 7 forms. Most of the guides I’ve seen mention using Postfix, and I’ve managed to install it following all the various guides available on the internet. However, there are so many variables (settings) at play with PHP, Postfix, Ubuntu OS and Google G Suite, I’m going in circles trying to work out what I’m doing wrong.

    Essentially I would like to only send emails out to email myself from [email protected] on the server. The Apache process is being run under the www-data user account on my server so when I was checking Postfix’s logs at /var/log/mail.log I don’t actually have an email/alias with that name.

    Could someone help me out here please?

    Possible reasons for not getting email, see:

    I can already do this through PHPMyAdmin.

    This uses the WP Mail SMTP plugin

    I found this article explaining some of the WordPress backend files. Unfortunately, most of this goes over my head.

    Found under the wp-includes directory is a file called pluggable.php. Inside this file contains settings and parameteres for PHPMailer

    if ( ! function_exists( 'wp_mail' ) ) :

    	 * Sends an email, similar to PHP's mail function.
    	 *
    	 * A true return value does not automatically mean that the user received the
    	 * email successfully. It just only means that the method used was able to
    	 * process the request without any errors.
    	 *
    	 * The default content type is <code>text/plain</code> which does not allow using HTML.
    	 * However, you can set the content type of the email by using the
    	 * {@see 'wp_mail_content_type'} filter.
    	 *
    	 * The default charset is based on the charset used on the blog. The charset can
    	 * be set using the {@see 'wp_mail_charset'} filter.
    	 *
