normally you can set the “featured image” inside the page/post-editor.

it is possible to show the first picture from a post automatic but this i don’t know. there are plugins to do that.

but i really would recommend to upload your “featured picture” inside the editor. (on the side where you write your text is on the right side (when you have 2 colums) the “uploader” for this picture)

Is the picture uploaded inside the editor as post preview? Can you see the picture in the editor? (right side in the editor)
