In reply to: [Rating-Widget: Star Review System] bad permission requestHi @hkpresent,
Just like it says on the plugin’s listing, Rating-Widget is a “Serviceware” plugin, i.e. it is a hosted ratings’ service. For you to use it, an account must be created on the service, therefore, that’s the first thing you encounter after activating the plugin. There’s no point for us postponing the permission request to a later stage as the plugin cannot function without it.
Have a nice day.

In reply to: [Rating-Widget: Star Review System] Scary Permisions Asked To Be Granted@enelleryx117 our plugin is a “Serviceware,” which means that the ratings are loaded from an external service (just like YouTube or DISQUS). Therefore, we have to create an account on our end so you can use it. Thus, we ask your permission to use your name and email for the account creation. All the rest of the data collected to make the product better. You can learn more here:
https://freemius.com/wordpress/usage-tracking/56/rating-widget/Just like the permissions you quoted explicitly mention, we do not collect any other data, sensitive or not, and definitely, don’t want to deal with the responsibility/liability of collecting any credit cards – it has nothing to do with our service.
So I understand your concern, but you have nothing to worry about. We have tens of thousands of happy users across dozens of platforms (WordPress is just one that we support), I’m sure that most of them are sane ??

In reply to: [Rating-Widget: Star Review System] Shortcode for top rated?@crosstrainerlearning you can see it in the “Visual” post/page editor. It’s available in the free version as well.
Hi @gegan249,
I’m sorry to hear about your experience though you are extremely exaggerating. We do show a list of the paid features on the right side of _our_ plugin’s settings. This comes in handy, so users can learn about the extra features they can get if they upgrade to our paid plan. Naturally, we also benefit from that, because we do want users to become our customers. It’s a common practice of freemium products. There are no “click-baits” nor “spam.”
Regarding the Rich-Snippets, different products use different business models. Some plugins do offer it for free, and you are welcome to choose them. Unlike other plugins, RatingWidget is a “serviceware” plugin, which means that the data is stored on our servers. To support the rich-snippets, there’s a higher load on our API since we need to load the ratings data before the HTML is rendered, and even though it’s cached daily, that resources load cost us money, which other plugins don’t have.
We are fully transparent with our plugin and our service coverage and understand that our service is not a good fit for every website. One of the main benefits of using a service instead of a standard plugin is that all the data and resource consumption are happening on our servers. So even if your website has millions of pageviews per day, by using RatingWidget, there’s almost ZERO effect on your site’s performance.
I would recommend looking at the YASR plugin as an alternative. Good luck!

In reply to: [Rating-Widget: Star Review System] Shortcode for top rated?Hi @qnkov, if you go to the page/post editor, you’ll notice a star ?? icon in the TinyMCE toolbar. Click it and it will help you set up a shortcode for your top rated table which you can embed in any page/post of your WordPress site.
Let me know if you found it.
