In reply to: Updating an old version of WordPress on my Earthlink siteIt looks like re-arranging the widgets did the trick. For some reason, the upgrade moved the right-hand column widgets to the left column. When I re-arranged them under the right column, all the information reappeared.
Now I’m got to go through this entire procedure again for blog #2.
Thanks again for your invaluable help.

In reply to: Updating an old version of WordPress on my Earthlink siteOK, I’ve upgraded step by step to version 3.0.1. There are two instructions I don’t understand, & I don’t know if they’re necessary:
10 Update Permalinks and .htaccess. Update your Permalink Structure and merge the custom rules, if necessary, into your .htaccess file.
13 Add security key definitions to the wp-config.php file
My blog functions OK. I haven’t attempted to edit or add posts. There’s a problem with the display, however. The database shows two sets of links that are supposed to show up on the right, but they are not visible. I do not know why.

In reply to: Updating an old version of WordPress on my Earthlink siteI uploaded the 2.5 files again, overwriting the previous upload. This time I got a workable dashboard. The blog functions, but I’ve lost some information, specifically some lists of links down the right-hand column. I don’t know how to re-create them, but perhaps they exist somewhere in the SQL database. I guess the next step is to upgrade to 2.7 and hope for the best.

In reply to: Updating an old version of WordPress on my Earthlink siteUpgrading from 2.3. to 2.5 worked, but it looks like some of the information on the sidebar has been lost, plus the dashboard is all wrong.
Perhaps if I try it again . .Forum: Installing WordPress
In reply to: Updating an old version of WordPress on my Earthlink siteI’ve succeeded in upgrading one of my blogs to WordPress 2.3. This is a time-consuming process, but now I’ll proceed onward to WordPress 2.5.

In reply to: Updating an old version of WordPress on my Earthlink siteOh, I just needed to display hidden files. I’ve backed up my 2 “.htaccess” files. Onwards.

In reply to: Updating an old version of WordPress on my Earthlink siteOh, I see the instructions call for backing up “.htaccess” files. I don’t have a wordpress directory (folder) per se. My wordpress files are in two separate directories under the URLS of the blogs themselves. The “.htaccess” files don’t show up using FireFTP for Firefox, but they do show up in the file directories of the Earthlink control center. If I can figure how to download them to my computer, I can proceed to the next step.

In reply to: Updating an old version of WordPress on my Earthlink siteI undid the damage done when I followed instructions from Earthlink “support”. Luckily, I backed up everything on my computer, so i was able to re-import my SQL database. But I am back to square one: I have these two blogs installed via ftp upload a few years ago, with WordPress version 2.1.2 installed separately for each blog. One blog works fine. I am unable to preserve changes to drafts or save new posts to the other–I had this same problem before messing with the installation today.
I would like to get the one blog working properly & if possible upgrade to the most recent version of WordPress for both.

In reply to: installation doesn’t startI’m completely mystified. I can log into my other blogs just fine. I have an empty SQL database set up for my new blog. The wp-config.php file is properly configured and is in the directory where it belongs. What a pain in the ass!

In reply to: almost pretty permalinksI was initially concerned, perhaps illogically, about the absence of actual, real, permanent web pages for each permalink. The idea that they would be generated each time they are accessed, ad hoc, gives them a phantom individual existence and makes them totally dependent on the interface with the SQL database. This did not appeal to me. But now my question: if there are no real web pages, how is anyway going to find my blog via search engines?

In reply to: Cannot create new category (WP 2.1)Curiously, I can’t add a new category with Internet Explorer, but so far it’s working with Opera. Still, whatever bug is causing this problem reported by many many people should be fixed.

In reply to: Cannot create new category (WP 2.1)I just installed WordPress 2.1.2, am experiencing all these problems: (1) can’t create new category, (2) get navigate away form page message. Previous Wp versions worked fine.

In reply to: I can’t add a categoryI just upgraded two blogs to WP 2.1.2. One blog works fine, but for the other I cannot add categories. I get no error messages. Nothing happens.
