In reply to: SEO and back linksIpstenu gives some good advice. The only way to build a healthy, sustainable website is through consistent hard work. You need to be constantly creating quality unique content and marketing it. There are no magic bullet shortcuts that will keep you at the top of the rankings for a long time.

In reply to: Google News & custom URLsIf you create a separate XML sitemap for news article then the unique three digits at the end of the URL for Google News is waived.

In reply to: A giant toplineDo you have supercache installed or some other caching program? That might keep you from seeing updates because you are viewing a previous version that is cached.

In reply to: HTML5One thing to keep in mind with HTML 5 is how you can clearly designate and identify which parts of a page are the content and which are the header, navigation, footer, etc.
In the past the search engines have had to decipher this on their own, but with HTML 5, if you use the different tags to identify which are the different parts of the body, then it can clearly have an SEO impact because the search engines will be able to more easily determine which is the content on the page to rank and which are the other items navigation, footer, paid links in side rails or footer which can be excluded.
This will force sites to place more links within content since those outside of the content will be able to be downgraded or excluded more easily if the HTML 5 tags are used.
The SEO value of a theme is based on its structure not simply whether it is classified as free or premium. So there is no simple answer based on whether it is free or premium. You would need to look at the actual code of the themes to determine if one may be more beneficial to SEO than another.

In reply to: WordPress or joomlaI have no experience with Joomla, but I have used both Drupal and WP quite a bit and my experience is similar to billgoldberg. Drupal is very powerful and has some nice features, but for ease of use, WP clearly takes the cake in my eyes.

In reply to: How Many Related Posts Should I Display For SEO Purposes?I agree with Ipstenu, if you show more than 10 related posts they are likely to be ignored by users. From a search engine perspective there are no issues with showing 10 though.

In reply to: SEO – Homepage less rank than internal pagesIt is interesting that your homepage does not show up with the site command for both www and non www, but hopefully changing the setting in Google Webmaster Tools will change that. At this point I would not worry too much about it, you know it has been indexed.

In reply to: SEO – Homepage less rank than internal pagesIf you do a site command in Google UK you will notice that Google does have your homepage indexed:
If it is a new site I would not worry too much right now for which page is ranking higher, sometimes newer sites tend to fluctuate in their rankings in the beginning.
Also, other factors, such as external links, can affect how well a page ranks.
The positive sign is that Google is finding, crawling and indexing your pages.
