In reply to: Built-in import/export functions not working as expected.Turns out I had an error in my nested comments XML. Correct that and nested comments display correctly after all. So the ReadyMade WordPress Importer plugin is indeed a win.
Marking this resolved because while the RSS-Importer plugin is still broken, I’ve found a workaround/alternate solution.

In reply to: Built-in import/export functions not working as expected.A follow-up: the TwentySeventeen theme doesn’t seem to show nested comments as nested anyway, but the TwentyFifteen theme does. Or at least, TwentyFifteen displays new nested comments as nested, the imported nested comments are still AWOL.

In reply to: Built-in import/export functions not working as expected.Found a glitch. While nested comments are recognized and imported, they apparently are not imported properly because they do not display at all, in the magazine theme I was using. Not displaying under the TwentySeventeen theme either.
Drat, I thought maybe I had found a winner. Keep looking or lose the nesting, I guess.

In reply to: Built-in import/export functions not working as expected.Preliminary testing shows that the latest version of ReadyMade WordPress Importer will accept the built-in export-styled XML files I’ve already prepared and properly import the posts, create the necessary users and import their comments into WP v4.9.4. Even though it’s been superseded by something else, it self-reports. It does not recognize or import the shortform category tag style mentioned above but it does recognize and import longform category tags.

Testing continues… I mention this in case it might help someone else, someday.
Perhaps the core WP maintainers can either update the RSS Import link to a plugin that works, or remove the link to a flawed plugin completely. Point users in the right direction….

In reply to: Built-in import/export functions not working as expected.Never mind. I’ve just taken a closer look at rss-importer.php and, it doesn’t currently do anything with comments. Doesn’t even check to see if they exist or not. So all of that functionality would need to be written from scratch.

In reply to: Built-in import/export functions not working as expected.I guess what I’d really like to know, did Rss-Importer ever work properly, and with which version of WP. Maybe I can install that legacy version, import, then pursue other options to migrate the content…

In reply to: Built-in import/export functions not working as expected.WPAllImport isn’t happy with the XML format generated by the built-in export function, which is what I copied when crafting XML for import. So at the very least, the XML will need to be refactored to some as-yet-unidentified format that it will be happy with.
Still, the built-in import function SHOULD work properly with the output from the built-in export function. Is there an identifiable group or person who has oversight / responsibility for the RSS Importer built-in, and who can be contacted privately? There’s not much exposed, here: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/rss-importer/ or the support forum, https://www.ads-software.com/support/plugin/rss-importer

In reply to: Built-in import/export functions not working as expected.WPAllImport, I’ll check it out. Damn shame about the built-ins.
Tagging onto the OP’s question. My situation is neither an improper WP => WP hosting migration nor a partial backup scenario, it’s a migration from a different platform.
If this plugin is not designed to recurse directories and add all media files found, then perhaps that capability could be considered….
