Thanks. Understood. If anyone searches the forum with that question in mind, as I did, they’ll now find this thread and will have a better understanding of the situation i.e. for a commercial/important site best not delete.
For a personal site like mine, with limited storage, they can delete jpgs to free up space as long as they understand and accept the risks. The risk can be mitigated by keeping backup copies of the uploads folder elsewhere.

I had another thought though. I’d been focussed on the server side of the problem, I wonder if it could be my PC as I realise I had made a significant change yesterday, moving from Kaspersky internet security to Bitlocker. Security packages do have a habit of looking at web-traffic, blocking malware sites for example, I wonder if that could have been interfering somehow.
The problem MAY be because the WP implementation is in a subdirectory i.e. example.com/blog
I solved my email problem a different way but if I find time to move the WP implementation out of the subdirectory I’ll test the plugin again and update here.
The site was pretty basic, no other active plugins and everything (WP, DIVI theme and browsers) on latest versions.

The only change I’ve done in the last 20 mins was to put a warning message on the login forms but then I tried to log in again and it worked so I tried with the login credentials of one of the guys who’d reported a problem and that worked too. Mystified.

In reply to: [Easy Google Maps] Problem loading data from CSVLoading the markers CSV doesn’t update table wp_gmp_marker_groups_relation correctly. A fix for the “save and re-import” issue might be to dump that table when doing the save and re-import that manually too. (wp_gmp_markers may need the same)

In reply to: [Easy Google Maps] Support is WOEFULLY lackingSimilar experience with Pro. No response to tech query after 2 weeks. Digging into the system – file structures and database to try to fix the query myself found another issue. Some of the exported marker file content is not re-instated when imported – I was trying to create code to edit the exported file to insert a large number of locations from another app.
