Hi, sorry for teh delay in reply- have done another clean install- had used a access manager- which I had previously uninstalled. Is working fine now- thanks for the assistance.
Ok a bit more information I am getting a 403 in the console (nothing showing up in the logs):

Referrer Policy: strict-origin-when-cross-originHi Andrew sorry was speaking from memory earlier- got home and back to the installation and I must clarify- the issue occurs when I click on the ‘Configure Payfast’ link (under Plugins), not when trying to activate as I stated earlier- plugin installs and activates (ostensibly) successfully. Not sure if that makes a difference in terms of figuring out what is going wrong, but I thought I should metion it- sorry for leading you up the garden path as it were.
Uninstall and reinstall of the plugin doesn’t fix the issue- have just done so.
In the documentation is states: ‘Navigate to Memberships > Payment Settings in your WordPress dashboard to complete the PayFast settings’. I cannot find this in the Dashboard- anywhere (again not sure if it helps but thought I should mention it)

Hi Andrew, thanks for the reply. By network activate I am assuming in a multisite set-up? I am not, is only one WP Site.
