Cool. This discussion has gone on long enough I feel fairly sure no one has leapt on this for a plugin.

For you that makes sense, but if I’m not using any plugins which generate extra tables, then the xml makes the most sense for me. But given that this is going to be WordPresses main import/export, it seems only natural that this be an option for backing up.

As a way to backup your blog? If this is the native format for import and export from WP 2.1, then it seems like it would be useful. Currently the main backup plugin runs through an sql dump.
