Why do your plugin need to tell me everytime that I need a caching plugin? I have already had to delete WP Rocket because it was conflicting with a plugin that I have to have for vaccine education. You sound a bit condescending thinking that just becuase your plugin is free that you know everything about my particular site? Why do you think that?

Thanks, Dion. How hard would it be to make a plugin with a simple checkbox to enable or disable this filter?

I’m looking for a plugin to see about deleting cookies, but I found this one: Show Me The Cookies which will give all the cookies on a site. It is interesting that they also concur that WordPress uses under-the-hood cookies by default.

Still the issue is not that I want to collect information—I don’t. And I don’t want WordPress collecting site data either. It is not hypocritical at all if I have no control over it. I SHOULD have control over both!

Show Me The Cookies displays all current cookies your site is using. Once activated, you can find this list under Appearance – Cookies.

Furthermore you can display this list to your visitors by placing the shortcode [cookies] into any post or page.

WordPress uses several cookies under the hood by default. If you’d like to filter these out, you can use the shortcode [cookies-nowp]. If you like, you can replace the default separator between the cookie name and its value by adding your own string between the opening and closing shortcode tags, for example [cookies] ==> [\cookies].

This plugin is based on code by David Artiss, who kindly made it available on GitHub. I’ve wrapped it up into this standalone plugin.

To find out more about what cookies are and what can be done with them, please read https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP_cookie

This links says that embedding videos does not leave cookies:

The pmbx.net site is an older version of wordpress of course, but still, I see the cookies being saved in Safari. Firefox, I do not, but I don’t use Firefox much. Haven’t tried Chrome.

I just confirmed with safari. I cleared the pmbx.net cookie after closing the pmbx.net tab. Then I opened a new tab and surfed to pmbx.net. When I check for cookies, its there.

Did you check the cookies in your browser? Are you using a private browsing window?

Clear your cache and try again. I found them on Safari.

Hmm. I have another site with an older version of WordPress. There are NO youtube videos on it. https://www.pmbx.net.

Yet I just confirmed that it DOES install cookies! See for yourself. I don’t believe that is a youtube embed issue.

I beg to differ on the cookies. They ARE set by the website. I’ve been doing this a long time and doing site development before WordPress was ever a thing.

Where is the setting for the cookies in WordPress? I’ll fix that right now.

    Thread Starter ronsmithmd

    (@ronsmithmd)

And I would do that for cookies, if I could. That too, is hardcoded into WordPress. But that is why always use private browsing for sites I do not know.

Maybe I’m just unaware of the checkbox that prevents that? If you know where the setting is to prevent WordPress from installing cookies, I’ll do it!

As it stands, I’ve don’t recall seeing a way for me to opt out on most web sites. I can set a cookie preference per website in my browser, but the onus is on me.

I sorry but I beg to differ with WordPress. If they indicate they are collecting information which they never specified they were doing, then they come out saying they are, especially in this release, my guess is, that by law I am entitled to opt out.

Or they can stop publishing WordPress…its deceptive not to have the option, and this could be a point of a class action lawsuit. Now I’m not wanting to sue, of course. I like WordPress. I want the option to opt out of data collection.

My guess is that this practice may already illegal under the GDPR.

The sites I run now are https://www.psalm8510.com and https://www.storybookpeds.com.

I host on my own hardware, not on WordPress.com.

While I appreciate you saying that WordPress dot org “doesn’t care what I do with my site,” this present cancel culture (think Dr. Seuss and the recent canceling of books that someone decided were not woke) prompts me to think otherwise. Wherever “it” thinks my business is “its” business will surely bring “its” wrath, my wordpress sites included.

The WordPress software just gives it to you that WordPress is collecting information, and doesn’t give you the choice to opt out. The information collected is also described in apparently intentional vagueness.

That is a violation of my privacy. I want it stopped. I want a checkbox where I can say “No, thank you” to my participation. WordPress may not care now, but things change and so could WordPress.

Does WordFence block this transfer of information?

Paddy, if you could please share how you resolved the missing “Enable auto-updates” problem? I have two sites with the same Watu Pro plugin. One shows properly shows the “Enable/Disable auto-updates” link and the other doesn’t. They are fairly identical in plugins. I’ve tried disabling and enabling all the plugins, to no avail. The plugin with the missing link NEVER indicates that there is an update. That is my bottom line issue. I’ve uninstralled and installed it too.

It would help if you could be detailed. Warmest regards, Ron.

Ok. I have had time to see any differences. I have on both my web sites Easy Updates Manager installed. The settings are exactly the same for WordPress updates and plugin updates.Everything is set to Manual, including Worpress.

I get some common plugins updated, but not others. Specifically, WATU Pro, never gets marked as needing updated in Storybook Peds (https://www.storybookpeds.com) and ALWAYS gets marked and shows as needing an update in Psalm8510 (https://www.psalm8510.com). That was the case just now.

Also, I get a notice that WordPress had automatically updated from version 5.6.1 to 5.6.2 on Storybook Peds and not on Psalm8510, despite the autoupdate settings being exactly the same.

I’ve tried deleting the Easy Updates Manager on Storybook, but then NOTHING gets marked as needing updating. I’ve tried disabling plugins, but to no avail.

This is THE PLUGIN FROM HELL! I WISH I HAD NEVER INSTALLED IT! You don’t document what is being done, and I cannot see which SQL settings are being left corrupted. I wnat this plugin OFF my systems, but now I’m afraid to do anything because the results are totally unpredictable.

On my site the ‘error’ message will not go away (now some twelve hours later) until I move iThemes out of the plugin directory. Then when I try to put it back the error returns. Not only that, when I open it from the SERVER it gives the same error. Basically iThemes has completely shut down my site. I’d like to get rid of it but even when I relocate it, it errors out the admin page immediately. Don’t know if its ‘advanced security’ is worth this mess.

    Hi, Baden.

I think I figured out the problem. Notice the title of the video that I had. It was how the video came to me and what I was using in the site and the post. There are two brackets in the name of the post. I removed those and repalced spaces with underlines and everything is working perfectly now:

    Before
Amazing Grace – Condoleezza Rice & Jenny Oaks Baker [720p].mp4

    After
    Amazing_Grace_Condoleezza_Rice_Jenny_Oaks_Baker_720p.mp4

Thanks for your help and for the great plugin!

    Ron
