A new version has been released with the fix. The issue affected Wordfence users. If you install version 1.9.9.8.3, you’ll be good to go.

    Hi @abigailm,

I’m sorry to hear about the issue you’re having.

Yes, that FAQ explains that the plugin uses the WordPress plugin API. It provides full control over plugin updates.

It’s after 2 am here as well, and we’re working on fixing the issue. Please submit all support requests at the WP-SpamShield Support page. Thank you.

At the top of the support forum there is a sticky post that we ask users to read first because it guides you to excellent troubleshooting options we have already put together for our plugin users.

We will be happy to help you. You will need to take the following steps:

    1. The Troubleshooting Guide and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) are the place to start.

Please take a few minutes to work through these, as they solve over 90% of issues users have. (Please be sure to follow all the steps, not just read through them.) The issue might not be what you suspect.

Once you have gone through the Troubleshooting Guide and FAQs, if that doesn’t solve the issue, we’ll need a bit more info from you on the specifics, and we’ll need to email back and forth, so you should move on to the next step.

    2. Submit a support request using the secure form at the WP-SpamShield Support page, our main support channel for the plugin. We have an excellent diagnostic process.

That will allow us to help you diagnose this, find out what the real issue is, and get things working right for you.

    Hi @woody56,

Thank you! I’m glad you like the plugin. ??

We did catch this as well, and it’s already been fixed, in version 1.4.3.4. If you make sure all your installs are up to date, you’ll be good to go.

The date/time of the error notices is before it was released, so those would have been on version 1.4.3.3. I noticed that in the diagnostic data you provided above, it has version 1.4.3.4. I’m guessing you updated to 1.4.3.4 after the errors were logged, and generated the diagnostic data right before posting the support request, and didn’t realize we already fixed it. ??

If you have any further questions, feel free to submit a support request here and we’ll be happy to help.

    Hi Patrick,

You’re very welcome! Sounds like you did some good work debugging. I’m glad that guide helped. That’s a good plan to leave debugging enabled while we’re trying to figure this out.

Don’t worry, we’ll help you figure all that out.

When you submit the support request, we will respond by email quickly, and when you get our response, you can then attach the log to your email back to us, and we’ll be happy to look into it further for you.

You have a great day too! ??

Just a word of caution: Allowing any API to implement PUT requests on your server opens up potential security risks and new attack vectors. Many hosts and web application firewalls (WAFs) block all PUT requests. Be sure that you know what you are doing. If you are unsure, have a security expert run a security audit on your setup.

    Hi @vahost,

I’ve been using your plugin for a couple years now, and mostly it does a good job.

    Thanks…I’m glad to hear.

That’s uncommon to hear that many spam got through. Can I ask how many total comment submissions you’ve received this year? (Or how many blocked spam?) That would help us to gauge the ratio. We consider 1 out of 10,000 spam submissions getting through to be our acceptable number (99.99% accuracy), and TBH it rarely violates that. Any time we hear of it higher than that threshold (aka accuracy less than 99.99%), we want to look into it. IF you’ve received 2,600,000 spam comment submissions this year, and only 260 got through, then that would be acceptable. ?? Otherwise we would want to improve that ratio.

The plugin stops 100% of automated (bot) spam, so these spam submissions that got through would be from human spammers. If you want us to look into your specific spam comments further, we would need to see your log files for comments. Since you mentioned a specific number of these — you mentioned 260 — it sounds like you’re tracking them specifically, in which case you should have some log files. You’ll need to submit a support request at the plugin’s support page so you can transmit those securely to us. I see that we’ve helped you before, so you should be familiar with it.

When we build filters into the plugin, they are going to affect all users, so we work to find a balance of filters that stop spam patterns that are rising on a global scale. If we don’t see patterns on a global scale, we generally don’t add it. Sometimes what methods spammers use to target one website will vary quite a bit from what is used to target other sites.

Keep in mind that we don’t want to restrict freedom of speech with human commenters. There are a number of options available to each website owner to customize the spam protection for their specific site. Be sure to make use of those features.

I would recommend using the Enhanced Comment Blacklist feature, as well as submitting your WP-SpamShield logs of the spam comments to us. (NOTE: DO NOT POST LOGS HERE OR ANYWHERE ONLINE!)

Enhanced Comment Blacklist adds the following features, among others:

    • Blocking Spammers by email address
    • Blocking Spammers by IP
    • Blocking Spammers by Server
    • Blocking Spammers by keyword or phrase

Can anything be done to stop them?

Yes, absolutely. ?? Between the advanced features, and submitting logs for us to examine, we’ll absolutely be able to put a stop to them.

    Hi @peezey01,

I’m sorry to hear you had an issue. We’re happy to help.

The contact form definitely does work. If you’re not getting the emails, it’s not an issue with the plugin. The contact form functionality has been thoroughly tested, on all different server setups and PHP versions. We’ve worked on thousands of sites, on almost every web host out there. And something like that, that is a major function of the plugin, gets regularly tested as well, so we’re not going to let its functionality break. SSL would not affect it. Sites are supposed to be moving towards SSL these days anyway, so the plugin fully supports SSL.

We already have an FAQ that addresses your specific issue, along with causes and how to fix it: Q: The contact form emails, new user notification emails, or comment notification emails never seem to reach my inbox. What might be causing this?

TL;DR: Sending email from PHP is a notoriously finicky process, and the breakdown in email delivery is most often caused by server issues, or server/email configuration. See the FAQ for full explanations and solutions.

Your specific issue is already addressed in the plugin docs. When it says “Not Installed Correctly” — it means exactly that: something is not installed correctly. The plugin will not work as intended until you fix the error and you will get error messages.
