    Thanks for your help!

    I went through each of the databases and found no such table called wp_sitemeta.

    Then, I noticed in the file manager someone had made a backup of the wp_config file, so i downloaded both and checked over them.

    I found these two lines in the middle of the file

    define('DISALLOW_FILE_EDIT',true);
    define('DISALLOW_FILE_MODS',true);

    When i removed them all was well, and i could log in as normal and install plugins.

    Disaster averted!

    Ok thanks for the link.

    I’ve visited each of the 7 sites, appending /wp-admin/network/ to the URL for each of them. Always the message says “You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page.”

    I’m not a WordPress guru, and i don’t even know if this is setup as a multisite or not. It was just a guess based on previous research as to why the install plugin button was missing (for 4 of the sites on this hosting package).

    Is there any way to undo a multi site without the master existing?
