    OK, figured it out finally!

“Shop Page” is NOT!!!! the category view page.
This is where all confusion came from. I was displaying category view page, assuming it is same as “shop” page.
Now, I am displaying shop page with added filtering to show the category content. Then site works the way I want to to work.

    Thanks,
Tried all suggestions without any luck.

Page that is always loading is:
    /wp-content/plugins/woocommerce/templates/taxonomy-product_cat.php

This is regardless of what page I set as “shop page”

    Thanks,
I realise that woocommerce inserts listing, filters, etc.

In fact I want to do exactly as you describe – I want to add a bit of static info to the page.
But, for some reason, woocommerce does not display my text. Only if address my page via permalink. It looks like woocommerce ignores the page I want to be my “shop” page.

    Thank you,

I solved (I think I did) the problem by installing:
Toolset plugin. This allowed me to add attributes and taxonimies among other things
Woof filter plugin allows me to filter products.

    To answer my own question.

When one creates a global attribute, there are choices for “Type”.
If one select “Text”, appropriate terms have to be entered manually when product is created.
If attribute type is “Select”, then one can select available options when creating product.

    Hope it makes sense.

    OK. Figured it out.

    1. What I want to do is NOT possible. The reason is simple — WP doe snot read directories, instead it uses information from database. Each image is a “media object” in database. So, it is not possible to just add custom directories with images.

    2. Suggestion made by @catacaustic is good, but it will only work if one wants to upload images, not to use existing ones.

    3. There are plugins to make life easier. In particular there is a media import plugin that allows selecting image from existing directory and import it into media library in WP.
While plugin does what I want to do, it is a manual operation. I will see if I can get it to easily import all images from a directory. (perhaps from command line)
