On the last day the site went down, the error log shows out of memory messages. Most of them are specific to W3 Total Cache Plugin and one is specific to the theme’s function file:

Here is a snippet of the error log:-

[12-Sep-2012 15:43:59] PHP Fatal error: Out of memory (allocated 2621440) (tried to allocate 142048 bytes) in /home/site-a/public_html/wp-content/themes/child-theme/functions.php on line 24

[12-Sep-2012 15:49:59] PHP Fatal error: Out of memory (allocated 5505024) (tried to allocate 73729 bytes) in /home/site-a/public_html/wp-content/plugins/w3-total-cache/lib/W3/Cache/File.php on line 153

Could it be that Total Cache is causing some problems?

I’m still trying to pinpoint the problem ??

Ok, I will do that too.

    Thanks again Esmi.

    Thanks you Esmi!

I will follow your tips and see how it goes.

I did deactivate all the plugins and the theme, there was no problems.
I then activated the plugins one by one whilst using the default wp theme again no problems.

I then deactivated all the plugins but activated the theme I purchased and the problems came back.

I will try resetting the plugins folder and investigate further.

Thanks Ipstenu, that was the first document I read before posting. The parts I am struggling with is the changes to the wp-config.php and the htaccess.

I can see in my wp-config file, there is a line: DOMAIN_CURRENT_SITE which stores the url for the domain but if I change this to the temp url it messes up. I can’t remember if I have to edit the $base value too.

In my htaccess file do I replace all instances of the domain with the temp url?

I wish I had kept some notes when I did this before ??

    Thanks Ipstenu.

I think it’s better for me to resort to a plugin. I don’t want to risk messing everything up.

At the risk of pushing my luck, can you recommend any plugins?

    Thanks for the reply Ipstenu.

Only PDFs and word docs would be uploaded. Sometimes these documents are changed and a newer version is put online but the url would need to remain the same as the original. If wordpress puts the documents into folders based on month this makes it difficult to overwrite the file. Unless, it’s done via ftp but that’s not always an option.

Is it possible and not too much trouble to change the upload folder to just /files/ and not use year/month?

The other question I had is, the blog in my sub-site is password protected, I need to also ensure the documents are only available if logged in, is that possible too?

As you may have guessed, I’m still getting to grips with wordpress ??

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi kbenjamin

    Did you resolve this?

I’ve just encountered this problem too. Everything had been working fine until today and I am due to put the site live in a few days ??

Thanks Jonathan. I ended up using a plugin.

I’d still be interested in getting it to work via htaccess so I’ll give this a try.

Just an update: I got it working using the usual 301 redirect method. I made a mistake and placed the code in the wrong part of my htaccess file, doh!

    Hope that helps others ??

Thanks Kevin really appreciate your reply and the advice.

I have tried the solution you suggested but it doesn’t seem to make a difference. I’m not even sure to be honest if it’s posisble to redirect a document in this way.

I have used the above code in the past to redirect pages and that works great but not having much luck with documents ??

Thank you for the link Andrea, it was very helpful.

Just one question though, as I already have the site setup on a temp url on the new server, if I was to use the method mentioned in the above link, would it be best to set the site up on my localhost test it all there and then transfer to the server and switch the DNS?

    (Hope that makes sense!)

    Thanks for your reply Andrea.

I have spent most of the day reading up on this and as you say it’s not as straightforward as one may think.

I’m at a loss as to what I should do. I currently have the multisite running on the temp url on the new server. Does it make sense to

    • switch the DNS to point to the new server
    • add a holding page here
    • Do a file/replace on the database to replace all instances of the temp url with the actual domain.
    • Make my changes in the htaccess and wpconfig
    • Test the links and put the site live

The thought of going through the whole install process again makes me want to pull my hair out ??

Thank you for the advice. I’m a bit stuck as to what I should do now.

I have spent hours getting the site to work on the temp url, I’m worried if I try to do the process again something may go wrong.

Do you think I should point the domain to the new server, place a holding page there whilst I try to get the new multisite working with the correct domain and not the temp url?

Sorry for all the questions, this is my first time doing this.

Thanks for your reply Tim and the advice. I didnt realise it would be problematic to change from temp url to the actual domain.

I have got it up and running, not even sure what the exact problem was but I re-installed everything and 4 hours later I have something working.

I do have the domain and there is a wp site running on there but it was single install not MU also I am setting the new site up on a new domain. I thought it might be easier to leave the old site where it is and install the new one on a temp url and then switch the domain.

Is this a bad way to go about it? I don’t want to set myself up for anymore major disasters.

What would you suggest I do?

    Thanks again for your reply.

Thanks Esmi but does this method also apply to wordpress “pages” as this is where I would like to take the content from.
