This has got to be super-easy…anyone?

No can do. Sucks, but there it is.

Well, at least I’ve got a clean answer and can stop trying. My .htaccess seemed to always be barely not working, but I suppose it’s something in how WordPress handles the RewriteUrl or something.

Oh…I see. The blog is not part of the directory structure. I thought that was an install called blog. What do I know…

Nope. It’s a fresh install. I don’t need to actually preserve anything. The examples I gave are just my configuration tests.

I technically can install WP any old place, but I’ve already got an index.php on the site root, and there are other websites (not on WP), that parallel the example.com/blog1 URL structure.

I would like the WP multisites to do the same, without having to clog up my web-site root and change my index and such.

EDIT: Oh, I see. I had a typo in the first post — see now.

I’m asking essentially the same question — though in your case, just install WP in a folder called “cat” — if I understand your URL scheme correctly.

Then all of your blogs will be subfolders of cat, and in your site-root. For example:
site-root.com/cat/blog1
site-root.com/blog2
