Categories and Locations are 2 different things, so are not linked together, but you can use just one so only Categories if you need linking and then config dropdown type differently as mentioned here: https://wpdirectorykit.com/documentation/#!/categories

You can also hide some fields based on category, config this when editing category

So all depends on your needs and many configurations covered
