Adding a PDF file- red ‘x’ appears below with most recently used category

When adding a new PDF file in the backend, after selecting a category for the new PDF, a red ‘x’ appears below the category field. There is nothing (that I can find) in the documentation about this. Why does it appear and what happens if you click the ‘x’?
