Unbelievable it works again after deactivating the event calendar plugin.
I do not have a clue why the calendar plugin has something to do with the images …
Do I best unistall the calendar plugin and upload again to make sure everything is ok?
Anyway 1000x thanks as my images are much more important then the calendar.

I re-installed wp-includes/functions.php from 2.9.1 and my site is back ok buy my images are still not

Additional: A new issue in WordPress 2.6 occurs when you have a custom directory for file uploads. The upload will work, but the link/thumbnail link will be wrong and so the image won’t appear. This is a bug which can be fixed in one of two ways (either works):
a) Specify the correct URL to the upload directory in the “optional” field just below the custom image path field.
b) There’s a new wp-includes/functions.php which will eliminate the issue. Download it and replace your existing wp-includes/functions.php file with it. This fix will be in 2.6.1.

What would have been the root cause: do I need to change something to be able to add this plugin or do I have to remove the other statistics plugin first (however this has no visitor mapping what I like to install).
