    Wow.

And what the user “desires” is irrelevant…

Your opinions are pretty much irrelevant to my problem.

For everything that you can do, there is a right way, and there is a wrong way.

And your approach to answering my questions is the wrong way.

    Actually, it doesn’t.

Be that as it may (FWIW, I think you’re wrong), it is not the way I want for my feed to format. First off, I don’t want to feed something that isn’t my content. Secondly, I don’t want to flood a reader with up to 12 enclosures. And third…

The unstated but de-facto convention is that multiple enclosures in a single item represent different formats of the same content.

As I said, each post will have a podcast which I produce and links to MP3 files (a requirement of the people providing music to me for my show); not different formats of the same content.

I think what I’m going to do is just refeed using Feeder. A few more steps than I really wanted to take, but at least the end result is what I want.

I’ll mark the thread “resolved,” but I’d like to recommend that rather than telling people they’re doing it wrong; the developers of WP and plugins consider solutions to their users desires. Crazy idea, I know.

    In reply to: Dreamhost down?

It looks like my site is back up, but the database is still down. I get my WP “Error establishing a database connection” error. Interestingly, though, the dreamhost.com domain itself is still down which means I can’t get to my control panel, either.

This was (is) far from just DH, BTW. MySpace was down, Yahoo went down briefly, and Media Temple is still down.

Trust me, having to go through a large host location and start resetting stuff one thing at a time after a complete, and unexpected power failure, is not an easy or quick task. things do *not* just start working again when the power comes back up. You have to take into consideration all of the different servers running all the different services (pop, smtp, http, ftp, dns, ssl…). Getting them all back up and talking to each other (and praying every step of the way that all the data is still there) is a miserable undertaking.

I feel more sorry for the folks at DH, MT, and anyone else effected by this than I do for myself because my podcast isn’t going to be heard today.

Speaking of that… I think this may all be my fault. I posted m latest podcast, like, 10 minutes before this happened ??

I think there may be a problem with the server. I just created a simple info.php file that only containd a infophp(); function and got the same 500 error.

    :/

I’ve actually already started coding it myself, and am making pretty good progress. I think I’m going to stick with this, because I need to learn to code PHP w/ MySQL better anyways ??

I am going to check out those plugins anyway, though.

    Thanks for the links ??

    I figured it out.

I wasn’t saving the file out properly in TextWrangler. I was saving it as Unicode UTF-8, but what I wanted was Unicode UTF-8 (No BOM).

I have no idea what a BOM is, but apparently the W3C doesn’t like it.

And… the CSS will be moved to an external style sheet.

This is just the way I develop my templates. It makes it easier to have all of the info on one page while I make it.

Right now, it’s just an HTML page. I haven’t hacked it apart for WP yet, so putting PHP snippets in it will only break it further.

I actually removed the xfn profile info thinking that it may be the cause of the problem. The XFN data isn’t at all necessary, anyway, unless you’re going to be using XFN (I never do, and in this case there will be even less of a chance of it happening). Other than that, the html type and and charset are just going to be what they are here when WP outputs it anyway. You’ll notice that that info on my blog at ipodnirvana.com is exactly the same as it is here.

Tollie.. I *do* like that idea. I’ll go check out the thread.

I’m actually using feedburner right now, but I’m not sure how it can help in this regard.

Well… it didn’t tell me how to do what I was thinking I wanted to do, but made me realize that I was really over thinking the situation.

It’s weird I had read it before, but I was totally involved in trying to find the answer to do something fairly obscure that i didn’t realize that I really didn’t need to do it at all ??

    Thanks.

Thanks. that’s my favorite one too, but I’m not too fond of the orange links with that style sheet. I may try something darker. Oranges are just so hard to do for screen, though.

    Here’s an interesting solution this.

I’m making an MP3 blog, and I’m wanting to link to about three mp3s per day. I’m also going to be doing a podcast, so i’m still going to want to have an enclosure on particular posts.

What I’ve figured out, is that if you implement andper’s hack above (I actually added 2 “p”s (so it reads httppp) just to be safe), you can then *manually* enter an enclosure by adding it as a custom field. Simply add ‘enclosure’ as the key (It may already be in the drop-down menu) and the URI of the podcast file in the value field.

    Seems to work great.

I just want to add my vote for disabling this “feature.” I can only second (or third, or fourth…) the concerns about breaking standards, causing major inconvenience for those who don’t want the feature, unnecessarily increasing bandwidth loads for others, and forcing downloads for several readers.

There seems to be many valid arguments for disabling the feature or altering it, and I have yet to read anything which supports keeping it in as is.

Wouldn’t it make more sense to have a “Include File as Enclosure” field in the advanced editing options?

People could just put the URL to the file they want in that field.

For anyone thinking that a free and open product like WP doesn’t deserve a particular level of support consider this: When you link to and recommend WP, you send traffic to this site. When you do that, you are also increasing the potential number of people clicking through to the various affiliate programs, as well as garnering attention for the developer.

Lack of support or response to this issue is not something that should be written off as something which should be expected because beggars can’t be choosers.

I turned off track back and ping back…

    No difference ??
