In reply to: moving blog to new domain (but same webhost) – no idea howWell, I have asked my web hosting company, and they won’t do it. Hiring a programmer is not really within budget. Is there really no one who can explain how to move one’s blog?

In reply to: Hurdles to installationOh, I did. They say it’s not them. They’ve never lied to me before.

In reply to: Sense of impending doom as I try to put blog in rootThanks, Songdog. However, I’ve been at it these past hours, and making zero progress, because I can’t even get past the first hurdle: accessing PLESK. Believe me, the world is a confusing place for the computer-barely-literate. Will ask in a new thread, since I can’t find answer on the net.

In reply to: Will this host work?Oh, and – wordpress.com has a number of themes you can use. If your desires for customization are very modest, those will do. If not, you’ll need www.ads-software.com and self-host. You can buy or get themes for free, at various places on the internet.

In reply to: Will this host work?Dear Clint,
I’m only answering as I see no one else has – but my knowledge about the matters is almost as limited as yours.
I looked at your host package and I see they have PSP, but I didn’t see mySQL, which is also necessary. Then again, I think it’s so basic that surely they have it? I noticed it’s Amsterdam-based. I’ve been with a Dutch webhost myself, for years (being Dutch) and they definitely do support wordpress and, I think, are a bit cheaper than the one you looked into. It is found at webreus.nl. Also, the fact that biohost did not reply to your questions is dubious. Webreus did, when I asked them the same thing.
Self-hosted simply means you find a webhost, like biohost or webreus, and put your blog there, instead of at wordpress.com (as distinguished from www.ads-software.com.) At wordpress.com, you get hosting for free.
Hope this helps, Clint.
Charlotte
P.S. There’s a simple wordpress installation procedure at webreus – even I succeeded with it. However, they place your blog in a folder called /wordpress, unless you do something clever. And this is something they don’t provide support for; you have to fix that, yourself. (With me, they correspond in Dutch – not sure whether they do English, too.)

In reply to: Sense of impending doom as I try to put blog in rootThanks, songdog. Your help is greatly appreciated, though it has not yet dispelled the sense of doom. I’m reading the texts, and I’m also now reading my webhosts PLESK manual, all of which is a huge amount of technical data to take in for one of such limited intellectual abilities.
There is bound to go something terribly wrong at some point, isn’t there?

In reply to: Edit area damndably smallThanks, t3. Right now I’m a little afraid to try it, but I’ll keep it in mind when I’ll be more audacious with such edits.

In reply to: Strange veil over my page – can you see it too?Well, looks like I’ve found the answer, with a little help from Firebug. It appears to be a known issue. Found this on the web:
The “ga_shade div tag” is an overlay to shade the website screen and is used by Google Analytics … However this brings out a problem, after disabling the overlay the shaded part of the website is still shaded and nothing can be clicked nor selected.
There’s a way to remove it, too. Had to clear cookies from my site. Will probably have forgotten all needed passwords, but oh well, I Can See Clearly Now, the veil as gone.

Well, I once had it done, and it was then clickable everywhere, basically. So also on this forum.

In reply to: Strange veil over my page – can you see it too?Ha, oh. I didn’t do that very well, did I….
Here’s the link to one image: https://img142.imageshack.us/i/veil1.jpg/
And here to the second one: https://img142.imageshack.us/i/veil2.jpg/
Second one’s a bit clearer, because there you can see where the veil stops and the rest of the page looks normal.
Well, thanks for your interest in my silly page and my silly veil.

Thank you for your troubles, alism, and you, mkissinger, for validating the code.
I suppose it isn’t much of a problem if no one but me can see it. Though it still is sort of…disturbing.
