I searched the net and I did find this: (not tested yet)
There’s a few caveats:
1. It’s not available in IE. It will eventually be fully supported in IE8+. It’ll just render an empty space in most unsupported browsers.
2. A bug is currently preventing it from functioning in any page with a meta “generator” tag. This tag is totally without function otherwise, so if you’re suffering from the problem feel free to delete the tag. Google is hoping to fix the bug in the next day or so. We’ll keep you posted here.

If you’re on WordPress and have a spurious generator tag to remove, here’s a simple hack:

remove_action('wp_head', 'wp_generator');

I am using IE9 but I have tested with FF 4.0.1 with same result..

Now it works.
I had to chmod folders under uploads/avatars/ to 777 for version 1.3 to work..

I’m not using timthumb.
I dont know if this helps you in any way, but here is some properties info of one avatar in both versions of your plugin:
