I’ve continued fiddling with the plugin to see if I need to change some setting…
On the thumbnails, setting it to “Title Only” shows the caption, which isn’t automatically populated with the title so…
On the detail image, both the caption and description show up no matter whether I have it set to Title Only or not.Forum: Plugins
In reply to: [Simple Photo Albums] Using this plugin with Envira GalleryPardon my ignorance – I didn’t know there WAS a native gallery in WordPress. I’ll have to find it and see if it’ll do what I’m after. If so, I can try the simple photo albums plugin again…

In reply to: Adjust column sizes in Media Library list view?I’m STILL trying galleries. I can’t believe it’s so &^%$#@ to find a basic gallery that’ll let me do a couple things. What do the aspiring but broke wedding photographers or school picture photographers do? They’ve gotta have the same problems I do…
1. A way to display a bunch of galleries from an event on a single page so I don’t have to create a separate page for every gallery.
2. Album/category/whatever images to click to jump to the gallery thumbnails that MAINTAIN the aspect ratio of the cover image.
3. Thumbnails that MAINTAIN the aspect ratio of the images – this thing with SQUARE thumbnails is a major pain in the tuchus.
4. Titles on the detail images.I’m looking at a dozen events a year with shoots of probably 10-12 subjects per, and putting 30-50 images in each gallery. I already have enough junk to do with photographs…
Oh well, back to loading plugins and rejecting ’em.

In reply to: More efficient image management?Question too big? Too small? Too dumb?

In reply to: [Gmedia Photo Gallery] Basic usage/configuration questionsThanks for the reply. So do I understand correctly that in the current version I’d create a bunch of galleries, and a bunch of pages to display the galleries – one gallery to a page at present? But in the future, I’ll hopefully be able to create a bunch of galleries and display them on a single page one at a time?

In reply to: 2013 Theme Footer – change height and positionThanks. Now that I have some idea where I should be looking I can fiddle with it and see if I can make it look a bit better…

In reply to: Margins during page layout?Unfortunately, the development is being done on my local PC, so there isn’t a URL. I managed to force the images into line by sticking a 60px margin on the left of the one on the left side, and a 60 px margin on the one on the right side, so it looks OK at the moment.
I figure there’s a setting SOMEWHERE that has the margins of some area wider than the text area, but I’m not sure how to even find it.
Once I have the site up on the server I’ll put in a URL so you can take a look.

In reply to: Adjust column sizes in Media Library list view?I’ve tried several plugins, but one problem is that NONE I’ve found actually REPLACE the library – as in when I’m adding media to a page, the original library with everything displayed in one huge jumble is still what gets used…
In THEORY, MaxGalleria SAYS Media Library Plus replaces it – actually, the demo SHOWS it replacing the media library, but it doesn’t actually do that on my PC. So, yes, I can create folders and whatever, but there’s still the same problem when you need to get at the images. Same thing happens in the list view – the images keep getting spread further and further apart as the categories grow.
I also tried a half dozen of the other “top ranked” things like Enhanced Media Library, Media File Manager, Media Library Assistant, and others I can’t even remember, and none of them were very useful…I found a number of other discussions railing at the inconvenience of the current media library, but nothing that provided an actual improvement… I’m used to Adobe Lightroom for image management, and despite it’s flaws and weaknesses, it provides an adequate way to manage hundreds of thousands of images and retrieve them as needed.
If there is some simple, free plugin out there that will enable me to implement a basic folder structure for the media library, and have EVERYTHING in WordPress USE that folder structure, it would make life simpler, so if you or anyone knows of one I’d be happy to give it a try.

In reply to: [Cyclone Slider] Removing the slide counter from displayI accidentally stumbled on the answer to this one… Turned off the controls and the circles are gone. I had no idea those were controls.

In reply to: Changing appearance of captions on images/thumbnails on home pageOK, I’m sure it’s not the classiest way to find it, but using the BFMI (Brute Force and Massive Ignorance) method, I found a spot that changes the font… In the style.css file, there’s an entry:
.wp-caption .wp-caption-text,
.entry-caption,
.gallery-caption {
color: #220e10;
font-size: 18px;
font-style: italic;
font-weight: 300;
margin: 0 0 24px;
}and when I commented it out, and pulled apart the items to which it pertains I found that any combination of
.wp-caption .wp-caption-text seems to apply to the caption on the image on my home page.But I don’t actually understand what I’m changing. I believe the definition will be applied to these four things:
.wp-caption .wp-caption-text,
.entry-caption,
.gallery-caption
BUT, there’s no comma between .wp-caption and .wp-caption-text. I presume this is somehow significant, but why? And do I have to keep them together? When I created:
.wp-caption .wp-caption-text {
color: red;
font-size: 36px;
font-style: italic;
font-weight: bold;
margin: 0 0 24px;
}
the caption changed. But when I took out .wp-caption-text IT STILL CHANGED. And when I left out .wp-caption and ONLY had .wp-caption-text IT ALSO CHANGED…
So, can someone give me a quick, ‘splanation of what I’m actually doing?Forum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: As a TOTALLY ignorant, first-time WordPress user, where do I start?Go ahead and set the GracieA account inactive. I’m not sure why it came back to life after the system told me the password had to be reset. I checked again yesterday, and I never received an email to change the password.
I need to have a title (actually a filename) displayed on the detail images. in the NextgenGallery plugin I’ve been trying to get that to work, but I’ve been unsuccessful. I followed the example in another topic and I was able to get caption to display but that doesn’t do me any good since title is automatically populated but caption isn’t. I got a reply from the NextgenGallery people, but it was just to push the subscription version.
Last night I downloaded EnviraGallery, which appears to do most of what I’m looking for, so I may just switch to that one or Foogallery, which I haven’t actually played with yet.Anyhow, thanks for all the help. I THINK I’ve got MOST of the simple stuff working MOST OF THE TIME, and the gallery is getting CLOSER to working well enough to be usable…

In reply to: As a TOTALLY ignorant, first-time WordPress user, where do I start?Cool. I created a child theme, and it SEEMS to be working. I’ve set the width to match my header (1600 px), and I’ve been rummaging through the CSS and php code making changes… No more grotesque yellow-ish footer and such.
I’m having one bizarre thing happen, but I’m not sure if it’s a problem or deliberate… On my about page, I have a couple images in with the text. With this theme, instead of everyone staying inside the borders, the two images, one which was against the left border and the other against the right, no extend PAST the borders for about 1/3 the width of the image… It’s not a problem on my monitors since they’re both 2560px wide, but I have no idea what this will look like on a “normal” person’s display ’til I eventually push everything up to Bluehost. Is there some setting of which I’m ignorant (amongst the million or so php, html, css, and WordPress things of which I know absolutely nothing that’ll tell it to KEEP EVERYTHING INSIDE THE BOUNDARIES?
