I had copied the original code before editing, and even replacing that seems to still cause the error

I am trying now to do a reinstall of WP hoping it will overwrite the problem files.
?? I hope it doesn’t destroy all the pages I made already

My access to the WP-admin also times out after a little while and asks me to log back in. I have never seen it do that before.

Yes if your .htaccess is no writeable if gives you the code and instructs you to copy it to the .htaccess.

I have tried changing it back to the original .htaccess, but it is still acting weird. And I can’t access the permalink page from wp-admin without getting booted

It allows access, downloads the update and trys to install but fails b/c of

I have FTP login details, but prefer to do it through the WP-admin, unless I have to manually update it

Its trying to upgrade to the root, when it should be in a /dir
