kept poking around – finally found the fix in theme options. weary eyes…doh!
HOMEPAGE SETTINGS: uncheck “Enable featured post slider” (it says for “homepage” but applies to posts page)

Had a similar problem and found your ‘fix.’ THANKS! Additional question: Is there a single file that contains the ‘get such-and-such a theme’ command, so that if you changed the theme name there, the desired theme would load? Or is it way more complicated than that?

NOT resolved for me, unfortunately.
