    Installing Restrict-content totally did the trick – I just marked the Forums page as “user level = subscriber” and that totally hides everything if the user is not logged in. When they’re logged in, they can see the forums.

    Thanks again for your help.

    If I’m ever at the point where I want some of the forums to be accessible to only certain users I’ll look at the private groups plugin again.

    Thanks so much, I’ll give that a try!

    Ok here it is: REDACTED

    I’d like people who are not logged in to not be able to see the forums page (shown as ‘Discussions’ on the menu).

    The various forums are marked as private so they should be not available if you’re not logged in. But I’d rather people not see the names of the forums either, if they’re not logged in. Basically I’d like the whole forums page to be “invisible” – if you choose it on the menu you’d get a message “not available unless you’re logged in” or something like that.

    Any easy way to do that? I’d think that would be doable with a standard WP page? Anyway, I surely appreciate your help!

    Thanks @robin-w

    This almost does the trick, and maybe I can live with it. But I’d love to make the names of the forums private too, and marking them private doesn’t seem to do that.

    Is there some way to just make the forums themselves invisible? Like so the page itself can’t be visited unless one is logged in?

    Like I said,I’m very new at this. I guess the visibility setting for forums does nearly everything I want – I set them to Invisible and people who aren’t logged in only see the names of the forums, but no posts!

    So maybe Private Groups is way more than I need.

    I wish that people that aren’t logged in couldn’t even see the names of the forums, though. So I’m still looking for advice, thanks again.

    thanks, that did it!

    And I’m proud of myself, I then noticed that the footer heading was also weirdly large, so I added this section to make it smaller:

    h2, .heading-size-3 { font-size: 2.2rem; opacity:0.8; font-weight: normal; }

    @media (min-width: 700px) {
            h2, .heading-size-3 { font-size: 3.2rem; }
    }

    Not sure that’s the best possible sizes or anything, but it changed it from huge to reasonable (in the context of my site anyway).

    Thanks for your help, @paulwp !
