In reply to: Did not back up database but did save all root directory filesRejoice! Rejoice! I will forever love my host. They backed up my database! It is back, and I can log in now. Hooray!! I learned a very valuable lesson. So, the first thing I will do is back up/copy my database. I can download and copy, so that’s good. And, all of my content is in the right place! All I have to do now is tweak with some of the images.
So, actually, I did not need to re-install my theme.
Whew. I don’t know how the magic of the internet works, but thank heavens, everything appears to work now!

In reply to: Did not back up database but did save all root directory filesNever mind! I know now where to start. It seems, when I get my old database back, I need to export using the export tool, correct?

In reply to: Did not back up database but did save all root directory filesI should add that I didn’t have any posts or comments..I had just made my theme the way I wanted and added text to pages and tweaked with theme settings. And I had uploaded images.
Is any of that in my wp content folder that I made copies of?
Thanks WPyogi. That was helpful. I did not export the content to an xml file. I didn’t have any posts, I just had some pages designed with script in them.
Your passive re-quoting the codex to me, verbatim, instead of something a little more specific that would be helpful to me. Never mind. I don’t know why I expected any web programmer computer person to be helpful. Why would a volunteer moderator for wordpress actually be helpful? I’ll just rebuild the site and be done with it.
Why do I sense that you two are being a bit sarcastic with me? I realize in this instance that I did a search of the codex and came up with one small bit of information that I needed. What I am asking now is for help with my dilemma. Am I asking in the wrong place? I thought WordPress was supposed to be pretty user friendly. I’ve spent hours in the forums yesterday and today trying to figure out how to move my stuff from https://strongmamabirth.com/wp to https://strongmamabirth.com and I felt like, to the best of my ability, I followed all the instructions in the multiple codex pages I read about this topic. But that led to issues with logging in that I couldn’t seem to solve. So, now, maybe I should ask a bit more nicely (as you can see from the green man next to my name), I am frustrated. And I am wondering, specifically, what I should do next. I have a completely saved collection of files that were in my /wp directory, which was live yesterday. I have a brand new database and install of WP and my theme. Can I do ANYTHING next to get me closer to where I was yesterday without re-creating the entire site? Thanks for your patience with me, and I would appreciate a direct link to anything that would be helpful.
This is the paragraph I am referring to:
By default, the files in the directory called wp-content are your own user-generated content, such as edited themes, new plugins, and uploaded files. Pay particular attention to backing up this area, along with your wp-config.php, which contains your connection details. The remaining files are mostly the core files, which are supplied by the WordPress download zip file.
Is there any way to get anything from my site that existed perfectly yesterday into the one that exists today if I backed up my entire WP directory (which was where my domain pointed to yesterday and it worked perfectly?)?
Wpyogi, if you are right, then this codex needs to be REMOVED. It is MISLEADING. It states that the FILES are the critical areas to back up, and that most of the core stuff comes from a reinstall of wordpress. Am I misunderstanding something????
If that is the case, then please explain THIS information in the Codex!!!
https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Backing_Up_Your_WordPress_Files
Are you sure you are giving the correct information? Because if so, I’m screwed. I read this page and backed up all my WP directory with all the content and other folders there. Then I created a new database and re-downloaded the most updated version of WordPress and my Theme since I could not log onto my site for the life of me, even after trying everything suggested for logon issues. Now that I have a new database, a new config file, and all of my old WP saved on my machine, I was hoping to get that old content back in. What gives!!???

In reply to: Changing site url to root directory from wp folderWell, apparently I made a beginner’s mistake. I tried copying all of the folders in the wp directory into my root directory, and that seemed to work, except I still cannot log in to the web site and there are a few broken links to images. At least I can narrow down what is wrong and search for answers.
