2) try to use some cache plugins.
3)If you have images, then try to use some plugins to compress it.Note: Even cheap hosting also bother so much, i believe you have got the good one.
Just work on above points and probably it will help you. Sometimes uses of Lots of JavaScript will also create problems.

2) Can do manually as well- Yes, you can manually remove the category as well.Let’s understand it with example.Let’s say you have a category url like: sharplesson.com/category/code-tutor/
And you want it to look like:
sharplesson.com/code-tutor/then follow bellow steps:
Step1: go to setting, you will see it in your dashboard.
Step2: then click permalinks
Step3: select custom.
Step4: enter /%category%/%postname%/
Step5: Just look for category base, and enter /
Step6: You are done baby.
