No, just put the wp-admin folder in the trash.

I’ve only shifted the wp-admin file to the trash. Nothing else.

Ok, we’re talking at cross purposes here.
This is is what I’m doing.

    From public_html, I click Upload.

This opens a new window, with the message Select the file you want to upload to “/home/takahe/public_html”. There is a drag-and-drop area, marked Drop files here to start uploading or, and a radio button marked Select File.

When I click Select File, it opens a window on my computer.
I select the WordPress folder from the desktop (where I unzipped it to), get the options Open or Cancel.
I click Open, and it opens the WordPress folder. I select the wp-admin folder, but the only options I have are Open or Cancel.
When I click Open, all it does is open that folder on my desktop. The only option I have is Cancel (or presumably to select one of the files), and I cannot click back to the browser until I click Cancel.
I have tried refreshing the browser after doing that, but it hasn’t uploaded wp-admin.

Yep, found that. I get the drag and drop pane with the alternative option to Select File. When I do that though, and navigate to the replacement file fomr the one I downloaded, it only offers me the option of opening the wp-admin folder, not selecting it whole. (Sorry, this is probably something really obvious, but I’m stuck.) Presumably I don’t have to select and upload every document within the folder individually?

Found the Upload command, but when I do a drag and drop upload of the wp-admin folder, I get a message saying “an unknown error occured”. If I go back to /home/takahe/public_html, it has created a zero bytes text/x-generic file called wp-admin.

What do I need to do?

Have found my way into public html, and am about to start deleting and replacing. I have your instructions printed out in front of me, and will cross things off as I go. (Oooh, this feels wrong.)

Ok, stupid question time: how do I upload the new files? Drag and drop, or do I need to go through a command in the File Manager?

Ok, just logging in to FreeParking.

Back online, and at my computer. With coffee!

Later would be good, although if you make suggestions in the interim I can get back to you tomorrow after I try them out. I have just learned the hard way not to try techie things when I’m either over-tired or under-caffeinated … and right now I’m both. Back in eleven hours. And thank you.

Ok, my server has finally stopped playing hide and seek ??

I’ve now tried switching to 2016, and the problem remains the same.

My host is FreeParking. I’ll need quite detailed instructions about how to reinstall core files. Or even just something nice and clear to tell the helpful tech support people tomorrow morning.

Apologies if I don’t respond to any suggestions for the next ten hours or so. The time difference makes things a bit tricky, and I really don’t want to be tinkering with things I don’t understand when I’m starting to nod off … ??

Sorry, I thought I’d been clearer. I have tried deactivating Jetpack, but it made no difference. I still got the broken image icon, including in the media library, although the info about the size and name of the image was as it should be. (It would all make sense if only the image was of a non-existant image …) (It wasn’t.)

I don’t have anything to stop people hotlinking.
The only plugins I have are Jetpacck and one for backing things up. (Stupidly I can’t access the dashboard at the moment – my browser keeps telling me it can’t locate the server.)

Ah, when I check my settings (Settings ––> Media) I see it’s got the “crop thumbnails to exact dimensions” selected. Stupid of me not to think of that, but it’s no a setting I’ve ever … um, ’set‘.

For future reference (and in case anyone else hits the same problem), I found that unchecking the box didn’t fix the images I had already uploaded, so I just deleted and re-did them all. So now they are neither cropped in the Media Library view, nor on the pages.

Thanks for your help. Seasonal is a really great theme.
