    We could dance around the semantics forever. As you note, the better news is that one post from you resulted in a level of clarity that resolved the issue. Maybe it won’t take me another 6 years to come back with a third question (you’ve been warned)! ?? Thanks again.

    Mika- I have comments set to be turned off after 28 days for an individual post. What I’ve found is that if you leave comments open for too long they can become an inroad for hackers. (Killed two of the 7 sites I was hosting over the years for just that reason.)

    Right now, following the pointers given to me by alchymyth, it looks like I must have changed the global settings after the first post and then, trying to fumble into what was happening thereafter, changed them back for the last three (and subsequent?) posts. It looks like all I have to do is go through the process he described to straighten out the 5 or so posts without comment balloons.

    Thanks.

    None of your Diva’s replies have contributed anything to the technical side of the question either. You are being arbitrary, and disingenuous. But you have the power to be that way, so what the heck. Protect your own, right? Actually, I understand. I had a corporate job 3 decades ago. That’s the way it works.

    I thank you, however, for providing me with a positive direction. At your suggestion I went through the process you described and found that while the very first post and the last 3 posts allowed comments in the manner you described, those in the middle did not. I’ll be changing that shortly.

    Again, thank you. I wish you’d picked up this thread a few days ago. It would have solved the problem and saved me much frustration.

    Then I presume you know why things are happening and just don’t want to tell me? As for me, I can’t see anything obvious and don’t know enough to tell even if it’s just a little less than obvious. Would I be so eager to expose my ignorance if I knew better?

    I realize that, as I get older, my brain density shrinks, and the extra space is invaded by additional bone mass, It becomes a bit more difficult for me to learn. But…

    I haven’t blamed anyone or anything for doing anything. What I’ve said is that some of my posts come through with comment balloons and others don’t. You might force yourself to take a look. https://www.casualham.com/ to see what I’m talking about.

    What I’ve asked is if anyone might know some specific reason why this might be happening or a specific “switch” that needs to be prodded. My apologies, but I haven’t seen that in your generic answers yet.

    It’s like I’ve called out, “Hey, I’m falling off a building! Can someone help?” And you’ve answered back, “You should use a rope!” Can you see where that might not solve the issue? The answer makes sense but it comes a little late in the process.

    Yes, I know. Thanks. As far as I’m aware, I’m allowing them on ALL posts but they only appear on some. Spotty, yes?

    Ah! Nope, your labels don’t exist in any template but you made me look…

    ‘div#container {
    width: 90%;
    }’

    changed from 100% in CSS narrowed the main content, which was a good thing because the problem had only been fixed in IE, not FF… (The difference in the metrics between the two can drive you crazy!)

    Thanks again!!

    As usual, the validator was no real help but a couple of the replies to the forum posts sent me back to look over my entries. Process of elimination (aka, “save as Draft”) found one that was doing something to something because my sidebar rupture only occurred when it was up. (My only regret in leaving blogger for word press is that word press’ error correction algorithms doesn’t seem to be as robust or accurate.)

    Re-did the post and all is well… Thanks again. This is getting to be a habit with you. ??

    Brain picking allowed? Somewhere in one of the WP style sheets is a value that sets the spacing between the main content and the sidebar. I know its there because I found it once but didn’t add it to my notes. Wouldn’t happen to know that one, would you?

    Thanks… That was stupidly simple. I can only claim being blinded by rage at blogspot as the reason I missed it. I owe you one.
