The closest solution I have found so far is to make all of the positioning relative – which adds a metric ton of white space to the header.

Logically this makes sense, as the objects are positioned relative to where they would have been, so that space is left open.

Would adding the img to the body tag send the picture full screen or just place it in the background of the center content column?

The suggestion then, as I hear it, is to simply create a sub domain, install the same child theme and have only the blog page exist there (for now)?
