Thanks. I think I fixed it. My .htaccess file was empty and my permissions were not right. I made my permissions 666, updated my permalink prefs and then changed my permissions back to 664. Putting them at 660 (like the instructions suggested) didn’t let me access the blog at all. Is 664 safe?

If anyone would mind testing my comments again I would appreciate it and thanks so much for the help.

That may explain my problem. I am trying to use the Giraffe theme and change from default blue to red. The blue one works fine (using WP 2.0), but no matter what I do I cannot change color.

Thanks. I am using CPanel and can’t get my hidden .htaccess file to show. There is not choice under my view menu or on the side.

Also, the above article says this

You can make all the files in your wp-content directory writable in two steps:

1. Go to your WordPress main directory, with a command like cd wordpress/
2. Enter chmod -R 777 wp-content

I don’t know what that means. I can highlight the folder of the theme I want to make writable, but where do I do step 2?
